Sustainable Farming

This is a site about Biofertilizers and sustainability. We’ll specifically focus on sustainable farming, sustainable agriculture, sustainable gardening, and food production. To get a little variety, we’ll add the occasional thought on recycling and sustainable living.

I’ve grouped biofertilizers with sustainable farming together for a reason. All farmers and gardeners know that the overall health and success of any plant starts below ground in the soil. Without living soils, a plant will never reach its potential.

So the idea of sustainable farming and gardening mostly revolves around soil and soil management.

Sustainable farming is the future. of farming.

Now it’s time to define a couple of keywords that we will use repeatedly on this site; biofertilizer and sustainability. There are a bunch of definitions out there, but here is how we will use these words on this site.

Sustainability

According to Dictionary.com sustainability is:

Environmental Science. the quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance:

This is a solid, simple definition and will be how we use sustainability on this site.

Biofertilizer

According to Wikipedia, here’s the definition of biofertilizer. Although kind of wordy, I like this definition. Remember that rhizosphere is another word for root zone.

A Bio fertilizer (also bio-fertilizer) is a substance which contains living microorganisms which, when applied to seeds, plant surfaces, or soil, colonize the rhizosphere or the interior of the plant and promotes growth by increasing the supply or availability of primary nutrients to the host plant.

Sustainable Farming and Biofertilizers

If we analyze both definitions, we find that biofertilizers fit very neatly into the definition of sustainability. They are not harmful to the environment nor do they deplete the natural resources. In fact, they help promote healthier soils and allow the use of less traditional fertilizers.

Additionally, biofertilizers help promote a long term, environmentally sustainable, ecological balance.
